Remember when Motorola was the leader in the cell phone game? Their crisp Razr’s, the Motorola Bluetooth headsets? Everyone who didn’t have one already wanted one. In 2006, Motorola was the second largest phone manufacturer in the world. After 2006, the Razr was no longer the front runner in the cell phone game. Motorola Bluetooth headsets remained popular, but without a cell driver, Motorola fell behind Apple and other competitors.Today, Motorola is not even in the top five biggest phone makers.
However, smartphones like the Droid X have helped Motorola push ahead with its first sales increase in four years. With a 6% increase in revenue to $5.8 billion in the third quarter, Motorola trumped analysts expectations. But their main profits came from the sale of their network equipment division, which helps other cellphone companies stay supplied. In July Motorola sold their division for $1.2 billion to Nokia Siemens Networks.
That means that early next year the company will be split into two. Their cellphones, Blue tooth headsets, and cable box company will be called Motorola Mobility. Their other products, mostly for marketed toward the government and corporations, will be called Motorola Solutions. While the split has been in the works for two years, poor phone sales made it a difficulty.
